Not My Typical Thursday Night

I normally wouldn’t find myself surrounded by bikers on the side of the highway. But after writing this post, I decided to delve a little deeper into the issue. I’d interviewed DPD, DPS, and affected residents, and it seemed the only thing left to do was get in the belly of the beast and attend the weekly “Bike Night” at High Five Cycles off 635. Let me just say for the record, on the whole the bikers were respectful and open to talking to me. I was accused of being a cop–more than once–but that’s neither here nor there.
I’m working on a longer form piece about the whole stunting culture and the community reaction to it, so I don’t want to scoop my own article, but here’s a sampling of what I’ve learned.

Tonight, Party Intergalactic Style

It shouldn’t take a Jedi mind trick to get you to Barnes & Noble this evening at 7 p.m. The Lincoln Park store is hosting an “Intergalactic Party” with Darth Vader’s Star Garrison, actor Mike Edmonds “Logray the Ewok” from Return of the Jedi and Cindy Freeling “Princess Anne-Droid” from Hardware Wars.
A calendar listing in today’s edition of Preston Hollow People erroneously stated the event would kick off at 1 a.m. B&N employees assured me the action starts at 7 p.m. So dust off your storm trooper helmet, grab your light saber, and may the force not disrupt your bedtime.

Daryl “Moose” Johnston Discusses Concussions on Tuesday
Former Cowboy Daryl “Moose” Johnston will present “Rebound and Recovery Concussion Discussion” at the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday. “With sports programs gearing up across the country, it’s important that parents, teachers, coaches and other adult supervisors understand concussions and how to handle them should a child or teen they know experience one,” said Johnston. “People immediately think of football when they think of concussions but other sports such as soccer and activities like cheerleading are potential environments for head injuries.” To purchase tickets to the Aug. 31 event, visit concussiondiscussion.eventbrite.com.By Joanna England Aug. 26, 2010 | 12:13 pm | No Comments | Comments RSS -

Get Your Bundt on With Today’s Groupon
News Flash: I love cake. A lot. If I could eat cake every day and not suffer the consequences, I totally would.Which brings me to some pretty exciting news: Today’s Groupon deal is for discounts at Wendy and Craig Moore’s Nothing Bundt Cakes, the specialty bakery at Preston Road and Royal Lane that serves — you got it — nothing but Bundt cakes.
Their cream cheese frosting is so ridiculously good! And the Bundtinis, which are cupcake-sized Bundts, are so cute and delicious. Sounds like a great surprise for teachers making it through their first week back at school!

Real Estate Roundup
Preston Royal Village is leading the changing tenant charge. Besides the recent Talula closure and impending Toy Maven expansion, Property Manager Kim Mangone said Zoe’s Kitchen should be moved into the Zinsky’s space in the next 60 days, and Short Stop Food To Go is currently building in the former Jamba Juice space. Short Stop will be moving south down Preston from its present location at the Forest intersection to Preston Royal Village in the coming months. One more juicy update: Elevation Burger is still headed to the Big D. We first reported on the D.C. burger joint’s move to Hillcrest Crossing in April, with an estimated opening at the end of summer. While that’s no longer in the cards, Leasing Agent David Thomas said Elevation Burger plans to start flipping patties by the end 2010.

Couple Fights Crime with iPhone App
Is there anything an iPhone can’t do? Besides make clear calls, that is. But what is a drop-free call history compared to the peace of mind the $4.99 iCam app can bring?
Janet and Vincent Hunter were not at home Friday afternoon when two would-be-burglars were scoping out their Royal Place property from the back porch, but they still saw their every move. Thanks to a webcam positioned near the back door and the streaming video provided by iCam software, Vincent was alerted of movement in his backyard on his iPhone. He promptly called the police, and although the miscreants got away, at least they were empty-handed.
The iCam software coupled with a home alarm system kept the burglars from entering the property after they had smashed the glass door. The above video shows the two burglars peeping inside and searching around for a suitable object to break the window with before fleeing the scene. The camera was still running when the police arrived, and two officers are seen entering the property with guns drawn.
The Hunters’ prudent use of technology is causing a buzz. Vincent will be a guest on Good Morning America tomorrow to discuss the attempted burglary. Janet, away in Germany on business, won’t be able to attend. But she’s still staying up to date on the action across the pond. She saw the video Vincent posted on YouTube Saturday morning Deutsch time, and even took a call from this reporter earlier today. While all the attention is fun, Janet (who dubbed herself iJanet and her husband, iVince) said it’s more than just a love fest for technology.
“We’re really hoping to catch these guys through this exposure,” Janet said.
The Hunters aren’t the only ones who are looking for the burglars, as another house on Royal Place was broken into earlier that same afternoon. However, these victims were not outfitted with iCams and their home alarm unfortunately malfunctioned, giving the burglars plenty of time to ransack the place.
I think I just discovered Apple’s next marketing campaign.
UPDATE: A third house, this one a mile away on Lawnhaven Road, has reported a burglary with a similar MO. The burglars entered the home on Monday through a window on the back patio while the owners were at work and “ransacked” the place. Both burglarized houses have been described as “ransacked.” Apparently the criminals are making quite a mess, not merely grabbing the goods and getting out of there.

Rockfish to Host ‘Lemons to Aid’ Stands

Back in July, we brought you the story of Lemons to Aid, an initiative founded by Preston Hollow resident Melissa Plaskoff. The basic gist is that kids operate lemonade stands and donate their proceeds to disaster relief efforts and other charities.
Well, Rockfish Seafood Grill is getting in on this deal in a big way. From 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, there will be Lemons to Aid stands outside all 15 of the Richardson-based chain’s restaurants. (Plaskoff will be at the one in Preston Forest Village.) One hundred percent of the lemonade proceeds will go to the Greater New Orleans Foundation, as will 10 percent of Rockfish’s profits tomorrow.
Can’t make it out tomorrow? Not to worry. Make a donation to the foundation at any Rockfish through Sunday, and you’ll get a free lemonade.
