  • Thanksgiving Thieves Indulge on Open Windows, Unattended Property

If only burglars always dressed like this, we'd have no trouble spotting them.

The November holiday that brought many people out of town and into the mall also ushered in a wave of crimes. The biggest heist happened on Nov. 26 at 4:30 a.m. in  the 4300 block of Park Lane.

Two-time Olympic medalist Missy Schwen Ryan was out of town when a burglar entered her home through an unlocked bedroom window. Her home alarm went off, which Ryan believes caused the thief/thieves to only hit one room.

Too bad it was where Ryan kept her jewelry box.

The bad guys made off with $75,000 in rings, necklaces, bracelets, and bangles. Ryan also lost two priceless items of Olympic memorabilia: a ring given to Olympians in 2000 and a necklace her coach had made during the 1996 games. When reached on  the phone Tuesday afternoon, Ryan seemed surprisingly upbeat. My guess is that the Hall of Fame rower feels pretty good about her chances should the burglars come calling when she’s home and armed with a paddle.

Elsewhere, NorthPark Center doubled its weekly quota of shoplifting and purse snatching.

    Per Dallas Police Department Reports:

Nov. 16 to 22, nine instances of shoplifting and one stolen purse

Nov. 23 to 29, 17 instances of shoplifting and two stolen purses

While purses are typically stolen when left on tables or benches, on Black Friday one woman reported having her arm candy removed from around her neck and shoulder. And she didn’t even realize it until later. Check out the Dec. 3 edition of Preston Hollow People for the full rundown on Thanksgiving weekend crime.

  • New Burgers, Bagels, Coming to Town

There are no shortage of places to grab a bite in PH, but the latest additions to the restaurant landscape do bring something new to the table.

The arrival of Elevation Burger at Hillcrest Crossing has been highly anticipated. Mostly because people hoped it was going to be an In-N-Out Burger. Nonetheless, patties of the Elevation variety are 100 percent USDA-certified organic beef from grass-fed, free range cows. Even the olive oil used on the french fries is heart healthy. According to Leigh Richter of Bradford Commerical Real Estate Services, you can sink your teeth into one of these fine burgers  starting December 10.

In other news, Einstein Bros. Bagels is planning on a Dec. 7 opening at Preston Royal Village. The bagel market has been an elusive one to capture, the most recent example being Zinsky’s closure just a few yards away. Will the power of the chain be enough to keep this bagel in business?

  • Pre-Thanksgiving Feasts in The Hollow

For those who can’t wait 26 hours to get their turkey on, there is hope. If you happen to be a St. Mark’s alum of relative youth, join the Young Alumni for a Thanksgiving party at Stoneleigh P tonight at 6:30 p.m.

All those non-St. Mark’s-affiliated turkey lovers can get a pre-game meal in at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church with a 9 a.m. Thanksgiving breakfast. The third time’s a charm, so starting Turkey day with two holiday meals under your belt will be a good thing. Well, maybe not for your belt…

  • Neighbor Vs. Neighbor

The Hillcrest Panthers will be heading about four miles away to Highlander Stadium in a couple of hours for their Class 4A Division II area playoff game at Highlander Stadium.

Hillcrest (8-2) and Highland Park (11-0) are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Although the schools are a mere 3.9 miles apart, the football teams have not met since 1999. Hillcrest and Highland Park also played in the 1992 and 1993 playoffs.

The winner moves on to play the Mesquite Poteet-Whitehouse winner in the third round next week.
