Hockaday Names New Headmistress

For just the eighth time since 1913, Hockaday has a new Head of School. Kim Wargo, a Louisiana native who is currently heading up the Katherine Delmar Burke School in San Francisco, will take the helm at Hockaday on July 1, 2011.

The unanimous decision by the school’s search committee is the conclusion of a 10-month, nationwide hunt to replace Jeanne Whitman, who announced in February that she would step down at the end of this school year after seven years of service.

“Kim Wargo is a person of outstanding achievement, intellect, and warmth,” search committee chair Talley Dunn said. “She embodies every goal of our search — she is the educator, the role model, the visionary and inspirational leader that we set out to find.”

She’s also an amateur radio personality. OK, that might be overstating it a bit, but Wargo did tape a segment of Story Corps with her daughter, Ida, in San Francisco. Check out the heartwarming tale here.
