  • Artist to Create ‘Fire Drawings’ Tonight

If the weather isn’t hot enough for you, how about some flaming art? David Sena — a Dallas native now living in Brooklyn — will be creating “fire drawings” tonight at Gallery Interiors, which is on the southwest corner of Preston and Royal. We’re told the evening begins at 7 p.m. with light bites and cocktails; Sena’s performance will start at 8:30.

  • Former Ursuline Star Playing in World Cup

Former Ursuline soccer standout Alina Garciamendez is playing for Mexico in the Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Mexico is in Group B. Garciamendez, who plays for Stanford, started in the team’s opener, a 1-1 draw against England. Mexico will take on Japan at 9 a.m. Friday.

Garciamendez is not the only soccer player in her family. Her younger brother, Kristian, helped Jesuit win a Class 5A state title in 2010, while her older brother, Erik, plays for Georgetown.

  • Savvy and Chic Camps Available Throughout Summer

Savvy and Chic is hosting camps throughout Dallas, including camps at The Hockaday School and Parish Episcopal School. Savvy and Chic is a program devoted to building healthy teen relationships, and their week-long camp guides girls towards positive choices and helps them navigate through difficult issues. The girls attending will learn a variety of skills focused on developing leadership, self-esteem, and positive attitudes while resisting bullying, peer pressure, and negative body images. Movie clips, music videos, social media, and magazines are all utilized to address these issues.

The camp is open to all girls going into grades 5-8. The Hockaday camp has begun and ends Friday. There are two one-week sessions at Parish Episcopal School (July 18-22 and July 25-29). Private camps are also available. For more information on the camps click here or contact Debbie Kenvin at 972-665-9977 or debbie@savvyandchic.com.

  • Cooling Your Heels With A Clean Snack

In the summer, we have a nightly routine of visiting the local yogurt shop. Last summer, we made our nightly pilgrimage to Orange Cup. Since it closed, we have been in search of the perfect spot to grab a bowl of yogurt. Well, we have struck gold. I Heart Yogurt, on the southeast corner of Preston and Royal, is the ticket. It is small, cute, and oh so clean. I usually don’t like yogurt or ice cream shops because they are sticky places where the smell makes my nose wrinkle.

I Heart Yogurt feels more like an operating room than a yogurt shop. Finding a crumb would make for a good scavenger hunt. And the toppings are perfectly full tins of colorful treats. Even the music is fun, but last night my daughter brought the iPad and we watched reruns of Modern Family as we brought down our temperature with the refreshing yogurt. Our summer nights have never been so cool.

  • Does Crime Increase as Temperatures Rise?

That’s the question I’m attempting to answer on behalf of all Hollow dwellers in this week’s paper. I’m comparing the number of burglaries committed in the distribution area for Preston Hollow People in the three coldest months (December, January, February) to the three hottest months (June, July, August). While conventional wisdom says crime rises along with the temperature, I wonder if that holds true for our little slice of reality.

On face value, the police blotters seem shorter to me during the summer than the winter, but I’ll let the crime statistics do the talking. And you of course, if you’re so inclined to share your opinion on the correlation between weather and thievery in the comments section.

  • What in The Hollow Are You Doing This Weekend?

Friday’s finally here. I saw the blessed day come about from a windowless room deep in the bowels of DISD headquarters.

And I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

Here’s to hoping your weekend had a better start than mine. Now, let’s get down to the business of entertainment.

Today: The Shops at Park Lane is hosting an outdoor screening of Shrek at 7 p.m., or you can catch an indoor show at Uncle Calvin’s, where Pierce and Grace Pettis along with Liz Longley will perform at 8 p.m.

Saturday: There are two ways to show the Bachman Lake Library some love. Teatro Flor Candela presents, “The Strolling Musician” at noon, and three hours later they are showing The Green Hornet. If you’re looking for something a little more social, head over to Northaven United Methodist Church for the Feast of Friendship at 5 p.m.

Sunday: You know what’s better than patriotic songs and pie on the 4th of July? Doing it all the week before, of course. Get an early dose of All-American fun at the Lovers Lane United Methodist Church “God & Country” concert and pie auction at 5 p.m.
