  • ESD Trial, Day 2 UPDATED

Yesterday’s revelation that live-blogging the courtroom proceedings was no bueno means your daily updates will be a lot less frequent than hoped. I’m considering still taking notes in live-blog fashion, but posting them en masse at the close of the trial each evening. That way you get the timeline of events and major developments as they unfolded, but I don’t break any rules and get myself thrown out of court.

After the 3 p.m. recess yesterday, the attorneys met with the judge in chambers to discuss the remainder of objections to items of evidence. I’m about to head to the courthouse for today’s activities, which include jury selection. Follow the jump for a few more nuggets from Monday that I didn’t have a chance to post. Read More…

  • DISD Wants Your Thoughts on Trustee Districts

Most of Preston Hollow People’s readership lives in DISD’s District 2, which completely surrounds the Highland Park school district and stretches as far east as White Rock Lake. The rest of you live in District 1, which sprawls as far north as the corner of Trinity Mills Road and Marsh Lane.

If you think these maps need to be redrawn, you’re in luck. DISD’s Board of Trustees wants to hear from you. Between tonight and Aug. 4, the board is hosting a series of public hearings. Jump for the details.

  • ESD Trial Begins Today

All’s quiet in County Law Courtroom No. 1 for now, but if the pre-trial antics are any indication, the civil lawsuit against the Episcopal School of Dallas will be spirited.

The suit, brought by a family known as John and Jane Doe, is related to a teacher’s alleged affair with a student.

The trial begins at 9 a.m., and I’ll be posting updates as often as I can. For the unabridged version, pick up the July 29 edition of Preston Hollow People.

  • Spieth Wins U.S. Junior Amateur … Again

Jesuit graduate Jordan Spieth has become only the second golfer to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship more than once. Perhaps you’ve heard of the other guy: Tiger Woods.

  • What in The Hollow Are You Doing This Weekend?

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s really hot outside. So, rather than the usual get-out-there-and-enjoy-life shtick you get from me, I have this advice: Stay inside. Go places with good A/C. And maybe a nice view. These are my top picks to explore the great indoors.

Today: Traveling to New York right now probably isn’t the wisest of vacation choices if you’re looking to beat the heat. In absence of a real Broadway show, check out “Broadway to Billboard: An Evening of Song” at the Episcopal School of Dallas. The curtain opens at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday:  You know what’s better than paying $20 to watch a cartoon on the big screen? Paying nothing. Bachman Lake Library is offering a free screening of Gnomeo & Juliet at 3 p.m. Let your kids bring a friend or two. Go home a hero. If you haven’t had enough of singing and dancing, then head to Unity Church of Dallas at 7:30 p.m. for a performance of the off-Broadway show, Nunsense. Tickets $12-15.

Sunday: I’m willing to bet your typical Sunday morning routine doesn’t include a lecture on jewelry. Take a walk on the wild side and listen to Bachendorf’s David Bock wax poetical on “The History, Customs, and Purchasing of Jewelry,” 9:30 a.m. at Congregation Tiferet Israel.

  • Jesuit, Ursuline Golfers Contend Nationally

Jesuit graduate Jordan Spieth has made it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which is being contested in Bremerton, Wash. Spieth won the golf tournament in 2009.

Meanwhile, in Olympia Fields, Ill., Ursuline senior Talia Campbell has earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

  • Blockbuster Clears Out

Unlike the drawn-out departure of Border’s from Preston Road and Royal Lane, Blockbuster left the shopping center Band-Aid-style with one swift motion.

All the signage and inventory is gone from the store. Only a handwritten letter taped to the front door remains. Anyone else feel like they just got dumped by text-message?
