Trio of SNAP Advocates Speak on ESD Campus

David Clohessy, Sarah Box, and Lisa Kendzior called for better treatment of victims of sexual abuse.
Standing in front of the sign for the Episcopal School of Dallas, David Clohessy asked the school to reconsider its decision to appeal a $9.2 million verdict handed down last week.
“All that will do is drag these families through more pain and suffering,” said Clohessy, the director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. “[ESD] will be saying that its reputation and assets are more important than your child’s safety.” Read More…

Hillcrest Grads Benefit From Newman’s Foundation

Newman first met the boys four years ago as freshman. All 11 students graduated and are attending college.
Braylon Adams and Steven Williams celebrated two graduations in the spring. In addition to completing high school, the boys were part of the inaugural class of Dallas Cowboys Terence Newman’s Rising Stars Foundation.
The organization provided four years of tutoring in core subjects, personal mentoring from Newman, and a $5,000 college scholarship. All 11 participants are now in college. Adams is playing football at Sam Houston State University, and Williams is playing for Texas A&M Commerce. Read More…

Wargo Brings Youthful Energy to Hockaday

Kim Wargo should feel at home at Hockaday, since the school’s new headmistress — who was officially installed Sunday — has worked at similar all-girls campuses for a number of years. But Wargo should also feel at home because she could easily pass for a student. Seriously. Wow.

We Welcome Your Letters on ESD
We’ve received a few letters regarding the ESD verdict, but you won’t see them in this week’s paper because A) This week’s paper was unusually small, and B) None of the letters arrived by our deadline. But we’re going to reserve space in the Oct. 7 edition to publish a bunch, so bring ’em on … as long as you don’t mind seeing your name published alongside your words. Send them to editor@peoplenewspapers.com. Please be sure to include a daytime phone number so we can call you to confirm.

Spreading World Peace, One Cute Kid at a Time

Lauren de la Vergne and Olivia Van Arsdale work on a poster on Sept. 21 for International Peace Day.
St. Alcuin Montessori School has my number, and I’m not afraid to admit it. First they sent me photos of children in traditional Ukrainian garb, and now this press release about International Peace Day comes zooming into my inbox. For a returned Peace Corps Volunteer like myself, this was right on target.
Well played, St. Alcuin’s, well played. Read More…

New Council Districts Could be Drawn Next Week
The redistricting hoopla that yielded a public forum Saturday could affect Preston Hollow, per maps posted on the Dallas City Council website.
District 13 will change, regardless, and its proposed borders (which you’ll find here, in a plan approved last month by the city’s redistricting commission) stayed constant in most new drafts Saturday from council members. But a few proposed revisions, including ones from Mayor Mike Rawlings, affect District 13’s western and/or southern boundaries.
Changes will become effective in 2013.
As for how the official map will shake out? That’s to be determined, hopefully during the regular city council meeting on Oct. 5. Worst-case scenario, a redistricting office employee tells me, the council has until Oct. 15 to make its final call.
