Children’s book author and illustrator Brian Floca stopped by Lamplighter on Oct. 28 as part of the school’s Dooley Author Series.

Lamplighter students weren’t the only ones to enjoy the event, though. Children from their partner DISD school, Walnut Hill Elementary, was also in attendance. The students interacted via video chats and pen-pal letters prior to their visit.

Floca spoke with the students about the artistic process for creating his book Locomotive. He also talked about growing up in Texas and his childhood spent sketching monsters and writing stories, as well as working in a Brooklyn studio with other children’s book authors.

“Nothing can happen before there is an idea,” Floca said. His goal is for the students “to have a sense that the book is something that comes about through a process.”

Floca is a Caldecott Award winner and his books have been on the New York Times best-seller list.
