  • Did You Head to The Soft Opening of Spec’s Saturday?

As a Houston native, I’m somewhat very familiar with the Spec’s chain of gourmet food and liquor stores. They’ve been around as long as I can remember. Oh, and most have an epic humidor.

Which leads me to ask, did anyone check out the new Spec’s at Walnut Hill and North Central Expressway? We all know Teresa Gubbins did, but that’s a given, right?

    Thoughts?

  • Providence Wins The ‘Super Bowl’

Back row: coach Clark Hunt, Jon Paul Lipe, Ryan Henry, Jack Meyer, Sam Lipper, Ryan Graham, and coach Dan Meyer; front row: Knobel Hunt, Michael Anderson, Moses Stewart, Drew Messick, and Jackson McFarlane

The Super Bowl of flag football, that is! Providence’s third-grade team was undefeated for the fourth season in a row.

Since they were just kindergartners, these 10 young gents have taken win after win, dominating their age group in the Spring Valley Athletic Association and Town North YMCA flag football leagues.

    Congrats, kiddos!

  • Yavneh Doles Out $18K in Scholarships

Yavneh Academy's Head of School Donald O'Quinn (back) with Rachel Siegel, Jillian Herstein, Rachel Goodman, Jori Epstein, Justine Berman, David Dunsky, and scholarship benefactor Andrew Schultz

Six outstanding Yavneh Academy students received $3,000 Schultz Family Community Service Scholarships. Andrew Schultz congratulated the scholarship winners, which include seniors Justine Berman, David Dunsky, Jori Epstein, Jillian Herstein, and juniors Rachel Goodman and Rachel Siegel.

The scholarship recognizes current Yavneh students who exude community leadership, involvement, and a personal commitment to giving back. These six students have accumulated more than 6,000 service hours during their time high school careers. Yavneh requires only 130 service hours to graduate.

“In reading the applications of the students I was blown away, over and over, by the amount of service, and the diversity of projects and incredible interests, that these students have participated in,” said Andrew Schultz.

Schultz noted that this year’s honorees have tutored classmates and others in the community, worked with special-needs children, collected food for the hungry, and raised funds to build a school in Ethiopia.

“Those standing here today are examples of the inspiration for this scholarship and we hope the rest of Yavneh’s student body, so many of whom we know are deeply devoted to their community will too be inspired to never stop acting on that,” said Schultz.

  • Preston Hollow Homes Featured in AIA Home Tour

Two super-modern Preston Hollow homes are stops on this year’s American Institute of Architects Dallas home tour on Saturday and Sunday. The houses, 11310 Crestbrook Dr. and 6265 Boca Raton Dr. (left), feature sleek exteriors and high-end finish-out worthy of a glossy magazine spread.

The Boca Raton home designed by Gary Olp of GGO Architects is slated for LEED-H Platinum certification, the highest rating in the system. The Crestbrook abode is a gallery of windows, acting as a sieve for tons of natural light. And that pool? Well, I just want to jump right in.

Want to see more? Head to the home tour’s website.

  • See Plowboy at Veggie Food Fest

    Photo: Chris McGathey

Our long-gone ace reporter Eric Nicholson discovered a group of rockin’ middle-schoolers that formed the band Plowboy last summer.

If you still haven’t seen the combo featuring Devonshire resident Evan O’Brien (lead guitar), St. Rita Catholic School student Matt Musso (drums), and East Dallas residents Jonah Smith (guitar, vocals) and Gus Baldwin (bass), head over to the Texas State Veggie Fair at Winfrey Point on White Rock Lake on Sunday. Plowboy plays at 11:30 a.m., which is perfect timing to grab a vegan corndog for lunch.

  • Will Hartnett Makes ‘Texas Monthly’ Best in Lege List

State Rep. Will Hartnett, R-Dallas, was heralded by Texas Monthly in their Best and Worst Legislators list as a lawmaker who is” giving lawyers a good name and spoiling the fun.”

TexMo had this to say about District 114’s Hartnett, who bested Democratic Party challenger John Wellik in November:

Hartnett is a quiet, unassuming sort who goes about his business, session after session, with little fanfare, passing bills on such scintillating subjects as notices of lis pendens and power of attorney. Then along comes a situation where the House needs a sharp legal mind who can rise above politics and carry out the law with impartiality and integrity. When that occurs, Hartnett is first on the list of candidates.

    That’s pretty high praise. Discuss?

  • Amy Westbrook Has a Hot New Look

Our Mother’s Day Makeover contest winner, Amy Westbrook, was a little gunshy about cutting her locks. But the results, courtesy of Gary D Salon in Preston Royal Southwest speak for themselves.

“Gary wanted me to go a little shorter and I was nervous,” Amy said, “so he compromised with me at this length.”

But with the helpful salon staff, a makeup session, and a $500 gift certificate from Clotheshorse Anonymous, we’re sure she’s turning heads! Congrats, Amy!
