  • Greenhill Student Hits The Right Note

Greenhill senior Russell Houston won first place in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s annual Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition on April 14. The teen cellist played Schelomo by Bloch, and he received a $3500 scholarship. Russell was also given the opportunity to play a live recording on National Public Radio’s From the Top with the DSO next year. Russell has been playing cello since he was 10 years old. This fall, he will study cello at Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music. Bravo, Russell!

  • Greenhill Students Win HS SxSW Film Festival

Boom from AVP Films on Vimeo.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how seven Greenhill short films were accepted into the Texas High School South by Southwest film festival, which was crazy because only 23 films were accepted from around the state.

Last night, Greenhill’s Andrew Fields, Daniel Matyas, and Brian Broder’s film Boom won best short film. I’m not surprised at all. These kids have incredible talent!

  • Kearns’ Jesuit Concert is Canceled

Quick note, if you made plans to attend Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns’ St. Patrick’s Day concert benefiting Jesuit: It’s canceled. We’re not sure why the show has been nixed, but any purchased tickets were refunded, says an employee of the AT&T Performing Arts Center, which handled sales.

  • Here’s a Short Photo Essay of my Night in Forestwood

Last night, I had a few minutes to kill before heading to a screening of Eddie Murphy’s latest terrible movie “1,000 Words.” If that sentence wasn’t enough to disuade you from seeing it, try this one: don’t go see it.

Anyway, I stopped in to Forestwood Center/parking lot full of stuff, hopped out, and looked around a bit. Here’s what I saw.

A quilt from Forestwood Shopping Center. Note: these are not swastikas; swastikas (after some disturbing Google Image searches) point clockwise. Still, maybe not the best quilt pattern.

At Kel's Kitchen, the plainest menu in the history of restaurants. I felt like I was buying coffee and pork commodities.

My dinner at Kel's Kitchen. For $8.90 (including tax) I got chicken-fried chicken, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, and cole slaw. If this isn't the most American thing you've seen all day, you're probably lying to yourself.

  • Norwood Flynn Gallery Hosts 2012 Spring Juried Show

Norwood Flynn Gallery, just off Bachman Lake, is a pretty charming space. I was there last week meeting with the gallery’s curator Mabel Peck and interviewed an artist from their upcoming exhibit opening March 10, who is a long time Preston Hollow resident, and has done some amazing work. Check out my feature on him tomorrow in Preston Hollow People.

This morning though, Mabel send word that Norwood Flynn Gallery will host a show for the visual arts senior students from Booker T. Washington High School April 14-21, with an artist reception April 21 from 6-8 p.m.

She mentioned the exhibit during our meeting, and said the students always produce the most beautiful art (and often sell their art for little to nothing). All of the proceeds will benefit DADA’s Edith Baker Art Scholarship and the Artist Career Development Fund.

Titled “It’s What’s for Dinner,” Crossland’s sculpture was selected out of 1134 total entries. Only 150 ceramic pieces will be shown. The exhibition will be in Seattle during the National Council in Education for the Ceramic Arts conference March 27-30.
