A Tale of Two Symphony Balls
Humor me for a moment as I put on my gossip columnist hat and entertain a little rumor. It’s not often that I get a phone call where someone dishes out dirt — that’s the kind of stuff I generally have to dig up myself.
Most commonly, phone calls and emails come flooding in about games won, galas well danced, and other joyous occasions. But yesterday, I got a call about the Junior Symphony Ball that included such memorable and visceral descriptions as “walking through vomit in cowboy boots,” “drunk fest,” and “complete orgy.” The caller, whose daughter attended the Jan. 28 ball, said chaperones turn a blind eye to alcohol and drug use, and that the event has been declining in decorum for years.
This all falls in stark contrast to the JSB that Michelle Duncan, co-chair of the event, attended.
“The things she’s attesting to are really not correct,” Duncan said.

Strutting for a Cause
Did you watch models wear the latest fashions on the runway this season? Don’t worry, neither did I. But luckily I didn’t have to. This Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Greenhill School students will be sporting the latest trends for a “Winter Wonderland” charity fashion show in the Greenhill library. The cost is $5 for Greenhill students and $8 for general admission. All proceeds benefit the Family Place. Another incentive to trek to Addison? The first 50 people who arrive will receive a Neiman Marcus gift bag and discounts from Vineyard Vines and the Melanie Gayle boutique.

Mirror, Mirror on The Wall, Who’s The Most Helpful of Them All?
Every day, newspapers are filled with articles about violence, crime, and general upheaval. While those stories are undoubtedly newsworthy, I gather from the disdain the American public shows for the media that you’d like to see more positive stories grace our pages.
We hear you.
Preston Hollow People would like to recognize the person who donated the most time, energy, and resources in 2011 as its People Person of the Year. However, we need your help. Let us know who you think deserves our inaugural volunteerism award by nominating someone right now. Winners will be announced in our Feb. 3 edition.

Students Helping Students

Head of school Joan Hill and students assembled hygiene kits last week for Community Partners of Dallas.
Lamplighter students helped provide comfort to abused and neglected children by assembling hygiene kits and donating them to Community Partners of Dallas.
“It’s fun helping other people,” said Azal, a first-grader at Lamplighter.
Azal captured the feeling of students who donated, assembled, and delivered hygiene kits for children that are removed from their homes. The kits included shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
Joan Hill, Lamplighter’s head of school, explained why the school is interested in being so involved in the community.
“Through our efforts with Community Partners, we are hoping to ease a difficult situation for a young child,” she said. “Lamplighter is committed to working to improve the lives of children in small ways each day.” Read More…

Kramer Wants Your Old Cell Phone, Platinum Jewelry
It’s pretty easy to find places to recycle paper products. But if your house is brimming with discarded electronics, the locations that accept those extremely expensive hunks of plastic are limited. Happily, Kramer Elementary is holding a technology recycling fundraiser today.
Feel free to drop off your old cell phones, game consoles, MP3 players, computers, and just about anything else with an on-off switch at 7131 Midbury Drive. The school is also accepting silver, gold, and platinum jewelry, because we all know how those precious metals can really clutter up a living space.

Yavneh Doles Out $18K in Scholarships

Yavneh Academy's Head of School Donald O'Quinn (back) with Rachel Siegel, Jillian Herstein, Rachel Goodman, Jori Epstein, Justine Berman, David Dunsky, and scholarship benefactor Andrew Schultz
Six outstanding Yavneh Academy students received $3,000 Schultz Family Community Service Scholarships. Andrew Schultz congratulated the scholarship winners, which include seniors Justine Berman, David Dunsky, Jori Epstein, Jillian Herstein, and juniors Rachel Goodman and Rachel Siegel.
The scholarship recognizes current Yavneh students who exude community leadership, involvement, and a personal commitment to giving back. These six students have accumulated more than 6,000 service hours during their time high school careers. Yavneh requires only 130 service hours to graduate.
“In reading the applications of the students I was blown away, over and over, by the amount of service, and the diversity of projects and incredible interests, that these students have participated in,” said Andrew Schultz.
Schultz noted that this year’s honorees have tutored classmates and others in the community, worked with special-needs children, collected food for the hungry, and raised funds to build a school in Ethiopia.
“Those standing here today are examples of the inspiration for this scholarship and we hope the rest of Yavneh’s student body, so many of whom we know are deeply devoted to their community will too be inspired to never stop acting on that,” said Schultz.
