Future Leaders Program by Bickel & Brewer Turns 10
In tomorrows edition of Preston Hollow People, I write about a remarkable foundation that helps DISD students from underprivledged communities get to college, and become leaders in their schools. The program, cofounded by Preston Hollow resident Bill Brewer, is called the Future Leaders Program, and is held at St. Mark’s, Hockaday, ESD, and Greenhill.
They started 10-years ago with just 30 students, and today have grown to more than 200 students from all across the city. Check out the full story on stands tomorrow.

Do Public School Tryout Fees Make Sense?
Speaking of financially related DISD matters, the Dallas Morning News is reporting that prospective members of W.T. White cheerleading and drill team had to pay $5 before being allowed to tryout. In the article, district spokesperson Jon Dahlander characterized the fee as minimal and said the practice was used by other school districts in the past.
Paying to tryout for a public school sport strikes me as odd, but even more so since the fee is attached only to cheerleading and drill team tryouts. If you’re going to tack on a price tag, do it across the board.
Who knows, maybe the money will go toward a scholarship for students with perfect attendance? Win-Win, DISD, Win-win.

DISD’s District 1 Race is (Officially) On
Four — count ‘em, four — candidates have now filed for the DISD District 1 seat that seven-year trustee Edwin Flores will leave in May.
With yesterday’s paperwork deadline come and gone, the final lineup is Michael Greenberg, Jennifer Levy, Elizabeth Jones, and (the latest) attorney Roland Love. We’ll have thoughts from each of them in Friday’s paper.
Meanwhile, check out this amusing blurb from our sister site, FrontBurner, about Jones’ campaign logo.

Three Now Gunning For DISD’s District 1
When he stepped down in February, DISD trustee Edwin Flores briefly left the District 1 bid to newcomer candidate Michael Greenberg, who stayed unopposed for all of two weeks.
Now, with a filing deadline that’s just around the corner on Monday, three hats are in the ring: Greenberg’s; that of RN/stay-at-home mom Jennifer Levy, who filed Feb. 21; and — as of today — another contender: Elizabeth Jones, a business adviser and UTD visiting professor.
You might know Jones’ campaign treasurer; she’s none other than 100-year-old real-estate maven Ebby Halliday.
