A Tale of Two Symphony Balls
Humor me for a moment as I put on my gossip columnist hat and entertain a little rumor. It’s not often that I get a phone call where someone dishes out dirt — that’s the kind of stuff I generally have to dig up myself.
Most commonly, phone calls and emails come flooding in about games won, galas well danced, and other joyous occasions. But yesterday, I got a call about the Junior Symphony Ball that included such memorable and visceral descriptions as “walking through vomit in cowboy boots,” “drunk fest,” and “complete orgy.” The caller, whose daughter attended the Jan. 28 ball, said chaperones turn a blind eye to alcohol and drug use, and that the event has been declining in decorum for years.
This all falls in stark contrast to the JSB that Michelle Duncan, co-chair of the event, attended.
“The things she’s attesting to are really not correct,” Duncan said.

Dave and Buster’s Plans New Flagship
Today the Dallas City Council approved a zoning change that will allow Dave and Buster’s to open a new flagship location at the corner of North Central Expressway and Walnut Hill Lane. The building, formerly the AMC Glen Lakes, is only about a mile away from an existing location, so it is expected that the Dallas-based company will simply move the old location to the more favorable spot.
“This is a very exciting project because it will be the new showcase facility for Dave and Buster’s,” said council member Ann Margolin when announcing the public hearing. After the council approved the measure, Mayor Michael Rawlings said he thought it was a great idea.
Dave and Buster’s public relations department has not been available for comment, but we expect it to be a very long time until the doors open for the new building.

Maccabeats Perform at Congregation Shearith Isreal

The Maccabeats, a Jewish doo-wop group that has been a YouTube sensation for nearly two years, will perform a sold-out show at Congregation Shearith Isreal, 9401 Douglas Ave., on Jan. 29. I recently discussed the band’s success, religious ideologies, and upcoming performance with member Meir Shapiro.
WJG: Who all do the Maccabeats consist of?
MS: When we started the group, we were mostly comprised of undergraduates at Yeshiva University with only a few guys. Our first year, we were a club sponsored by the school, and they helped us fund our first album. Now most of us are in graduate school, and there are 14 members in the group.
WJG: When did the Maccabeats become a YouTube sensation?
MS: We would like to think we became a YouTube sensation in March 2010 from one of our first videos, but it only got 100,000 hits. With the release of “Candlelight,” we went viral. [The video now has nearly 8 million hits.]
Local Jewish communities began to recognize us, and we didn’t expect it! It was really the perfect storm, and as soon as the news stations started noticing us, we got very popular. Read More…

Nowitzki Gets Presidential Nod, Top-40 Chops
Two quick notes about more-than-a-little-famous Preston Hollow resident Dirk Nowitzki:
1. Barack Obama lauded the Dallas Mavericks today.
2. Nowitzki has made a bizarrely funny rendering of a Britney Spears song. Seriously. It’s been circulating since Friday.

AMC Glen Lakes to Become Dave & Buster’s?
In the summer of 2009, I toured the shell of the AMC Glen Lakes, my employer during the early ’90s, and wrote a story about how it was sitting vacant along Central Expressway, gathering dust. My tour guide, leasing agent Sharon Friedberg, told me there was some interest in converting the old multiplex into a Dave & Buster’s-style entertainment venue, even though an actual Dave & Buster’s sits just on the other side of Walnut Hill Lane. As it turns out, Friedberg was prophetic. Maria Halkias reports in today’s Dallas Morning News that Dave & Buster’s plans to convert the Glen Lakes into a replacement for its nearby location.

Salon Satirist Slams Dubya
This gem from Salon.com came zooming into my inbox this morning via my handy dandy Preston Hollow Google alerts. It’s total nonsense, of course, but it is hilarious nonsense. A teaser:
Sources interviewed for this article said that Mr. Bush spends at least eight hours of each day at the Preston Hollow Shopping Center, a popular retail destination near his home in suburban Dallas. “Other than that chimichanga lunch he doesn’t really have a set routine,” said one source. “Sometimes he’ll hang around Lenscrafters trying on glasses or head over to Abercrombie & Fitch and watch the girls fold pants. Last week I saw him inside Pottery Barn sleeping in a leather recliner.”

Would PH Welcome a Kardashian?
The blogosphere is all a twitter with the news that Khloe Kardashian, along with her NBA player husband Lamar Odom, will soon be headed to the Big D. The Fort-Worth Star Telegram has already suggested Preston Hollow as a potential homestead for the couple.
What say you, opinionated (potential) neighbors?

What in The Hollow Are You Doing This Weekend?
There are only 15 shopping days left until Christmas. This means you likely can’t do any more online shopping, which is a pity as it eliminates lines, crowds, and the need to change out of your pajamas. But maybe that’s just me.In between dashing to and fro stores and the mall, hit up these festive events.
Today: There’s something timeless about instrumental music. If you’d rather not shell out the cash to teach your children the value of strings and horns at the Dallas Symphony, St. Mark’s middle and upper school orchestra concert begins at 7 p.m.
Saturday: Maybe you’ve missed Santa at his previous Preston Hollow stops, but there’s still time to catch the jolly man before he makes the rounds on Dec. 24. Town North YMCA is offering cookies to sweeten the photo opp. The holiday fun begins at 10 a.m.
Sunday: Get in the Christmas spirit with a rousing concert by the Orchestra of New Spain, 6 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church.
