  • R.I.P., AMC Glen Lakes

If this picture had been taken 20 years earlier, the concession stand would be right in the middle.

Recently, the AMC Glen Lakes multiplex was demolished to make way for a new Dave and Buster’s. Obviously, based on the state of things in this picture I snapped Saturday, I got there too late to grab a brick as a souvenir. The Glen Lakes was where I worked during my junior and senior years of high school, as well as the summer after my freshman year of college. I’ve never had a job I enjoyed more than that one. Maybe that’s because all of the income I earned for tearing tickets, serving popcorn, and cleaning auditoriums was completely disposable, since I had zero responsibilities at the time. The free movies didn’t hurt either. … [cue the touching off-mic tribute] … Stay hard, Glen Lakes!

I took this picture only because nobody was there to stop me.

  • Today’s Your Last Chance to Rock The Park

So maybe the last time you played in a band it was in preparation for your sixth-grade talent show. The Shops at Park Lane is giving you a chance to relive that middle school dream in their battle of the bands competition, “Rock the Park.” The competition is split into two rounds. On April 21 and 23, from 7 to 10 p.m., bands will compete in the first round on the lawn in front of Gordon Biersch. Then, on May 12, at the same time and place, the final two bands will duke it out for the ultimate prize, a chance to play at the Homegrown Music and Arts Festival on May 26.  To compete in the battle, you have to submit a demo by day’s end.

  • Providence Alumni Celebrate Texas Independence

Steve Spurgin, and Casey and Collin Prater

Did you celebrate Texas Independence day earlier this month? People Newspapers happily closed at noon for a combined observance of our fair state’s liberty as well as Peasants’ Day in Burma. Our newspaper may be local, but our company holidays are global. Providence alumni celebrated Texas Independence Day on March 1 at the home of Sarah and Elizabeth Johnson in the Park Cities. These post-college friends dined on Tex-Mex, reminisced about their days at Providence, and enjoyed Texas music. Read More…

  • Ready for the Kosher Chili Cook-Off?

Friday’s paper highlights the 19th annual Dallas Kosher Chili Cook-Off atTiferet Israel, and the three friends — Jack Baum, Mark Kleinman, and Dan Prescott — who first got the ball rolling (the pot simmering?) nearly two decades ago. The event draws more than 5,000 people these days, and around 50 teams will compete on March 18.

If — in Prescott’s words — the heartburn-gift “that keeps on giving” isn’t enough to entice you, consider Tiferet Isreal’s top 10 reasons to attend, which just arrived via email.

    10. There’s more to eat than just chili; vegetarian chili teams compete, and non-chili options are sold too!
    9. The weather is almost always great. Even years when Dallas gets snow one week later.
    8. You can cozy up with thousands of Kosher food lovers.
    7. You can support excellent charities simply by eating.
    6. You can challenge yourself to eat like a real Texan by taking a chili-pepper challenge.
    5. You and your family get to take a break from Passover cleaning.
    4. There was nothing like this in the old country (“back east”* or Europe)
    3. You can check out the brand new Northaven Trail in our backyard.
    2. This is the original Kosher Chili Cook-Off – we’ve been copied by other cities, but you don’t have to leave Dallas for this one!
    1. Your rabbi would approve. In fact, your rabbi will probably be there!

*Actually, Rhode Island has a kosher chili cook-off these days. But reason No. 2 covers that.

  • Clint Black Loves Playing School Galas

When Jesuit booked country music superstar Clint Black a couple of years ago, I was impressed. When I noticed that he performed at Hockaday this month, my enthusiasm was somewhat tempered. But when I found out he’s also performing for Shelton before month’s end, I’d reached the “oh, come on” stage.

My wife and I are planning a party for our 10th anniversary in May. You think we could book him for that shindig?

  • Northaven UMC Attracts Hate Mail

For poor line spacing? Whodathunkit? I can’t speak for Northaven, but if somebody’s going to call me out, I’d prefer they do it with impeccable handwriting and questionable spelling. H/T Eric Folkerth.

  • Nancy and Richard Rogers Sponsor Mad Hatter’s Tea

    Nancy Rogers Photo: Jeanne Prejean

Celebrating its 24th year, the Mad Hatter’s Tea is a fundraising event sponsored by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Preston Hollow residents Nancy and Richard Rogers recently signed on to sponsor this year’s festivities on April 12.

More than 600 guests, some from as far away as California, plan their trips to Dallas not only to take part in the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party but to view the glorious springtime azalea displays and flowers that grace the arboretum during the Dallas Blooms Festival.

This year’s event will feature hat judges Lita Asscher, Brenda Bogart, Kenneth Craighead, Patricia Meadows, Gail Sachson, and Jeremy Strick. The esteemed panel will award winners in categories ranging from “Best of Show” to “Most Whimsical.”

    Game on.
