  • Sleep All Day, Shop All Night

What do motorcycle jackets, bright bags, furry heels, and pencil skirts have in common? They are the fashion must-haves for this season. So maybe you are like me and not so caught up on the fall trends. Luckily for us, tonight is Fashion’s Night Out. The annual fashion event is held in cities around the world, including New York, Paris, Milan, and Dallas. The goal? To raise everyone’s excitement about the fashion season and to save on special after-hours shopping. There are countless invite-only parties throughout the area, but I am keeping my eye out for the affordable events close to the Hollow.

Stores throughout Dallas will be staying open late, offering one-time deals on their latest designs. At NorthPark Center there is live music from the Bart Marantz Jazz Ensemble, the Dallas String Quartet, and Brad Hanson. The night does not stop at fashion; samples will be available from La Duni and Bistro | N.

The Galleria Dallas, which often plays second fiddle to NorthPark extravaganzas, is pulling out all the stops tonight. A quarter-mile runway, the longest runway in America, will spread through the mall. The Fashion Show will run from 6 to 7 p.m, but the stores will stay open later. Not in the mood to take on mall crowds? Make the short trip to luxury fashion complex Highland Park Village. As you walk through the 20 boutiques, the village will keep you entertained with music, art showings, food, and cocktails.

  • Wacko Sales

Summer is here and I have been shopping for some inexpensive (code for “sale”) items for the kids and me.  Sometimes NorthPark Center is crowded so the other day I headed north on Preston Road looking for somewhere to earn a few miles on my credit card.

I arrived at The Gap at Preston and Royal.  I have been to the store several times and each time there is a different sale.  I once wandered in and there was a sale because it was Tuesday.  Another time there was a 40 percent off day and another time a 15 percent off day.  This week there is a buy-one-get-one for $5 day, but only on kids shirts and not on shorts.  Keep in mind the 40 percent off  is good on most items, but not for jeans and, by the way, the buy-one-get-one for $5 sale doesn’t apply to marked down merchandise.  But, that’s okay because there’s an extra discount if you use your Gap credit card or open an account.

Confused? I love a great sale, but I also like predictability.  Spastic sales, like a spastic colon, are an annoyance.  I always leave the Gap wondering if I got the best deal or will there be a better sale tomorrow.  Maybe that’s the point. Maybe spastic sales bring shoppers back or maybe they just go to Nordstrom for the oh-so-simple semi-annual sale.

  • Amy Westbrook Has a Hot New Look

Our Mother’s Day Makeover contest winner, Amy Westbrook, was a little gunshy about cutting her locks. But the results, courtesy of Gary D Salon in Preston Royal Southwest speak for themselves.

“Gary wanted me to go a little shorter and I was nervous,” Amy said, “so he compromised with me at this length.”

But with the helpful salon staff, a makeup session, and a $500 gift certificate from Clotheshorse Anonymous, we’re sure she’s turning heads! Congrats, Amy!

  • Lamplighter Grads Donate Dresses in NOLA

Lamplighter alumnae and staff with students at Warren Easton Charter School in New Orleans.

Lamplighter alumnae Coco Freling, Katie Kerrigan, Chandler Tucker and Lauren Chilton donated 170 dresses to students at Warren Easter Charter School in New Orleans earlier this month. This is the second year Lamplighter grads have partnered with the school, which was severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“The most rewarding feeling was the look on the girls’ faces after they slipped the dresses on for the first time,” alumna Chandler Tucker said. “They lit up, and ran over and hugged us with much gratitude. This experience has taught me to not take things for granted, and I’m blessed I was a part of it.” Read More…

  • Do You Know a Mother Who Needs Pampering?

Like most people, I often struggle with what to get my mother for Mother’s Day. It’s one of those holidays that, if you miss the mark, you feel like a total jerk. However, you don’t want to go broke, either.

But some moms deserve every little luxury for such a very special day. Perhaps they sacrifice what little personal time they have to make their families and communities shine. Or maybe they are experts at doing more with less and less.

For these amazing moms, we’re launching our Mother’s Day Makeover contest that will give them a day of pampering. The prize includes a complete hair makeover and makeup from Gary D Salon, $500 worth of clothing and accessories from Clotheshorse Anonymous, and a results-oriented personal training session from fitness expert Gene White.

If you know a mother in Preston Hollow that is especially deserving, send an email to editor@peoplenewspapers.com briefly telling us why that special mother deserves the prize. Don’t forget to include a daytime phone number and the mother’s ZIP Code! The deadline for nominations is April 25.

  • Hockaday Community Kicks Off Shoes

Hockaday Upper School students stand shoeless to raise awareness for needy children. Staff Photo: Christina Barany

In an event billed as “One Day Without Shoes,” you’d think students would actually, you know, go the day without wearing shoes. And you’d be wrong.

“We can’t let our kids do that,” said Meshea Matthews, dean of students at Hockaday. “It’s not safe.”

But isn’t that the point? That kids all over the world have to walk barefoot in a lot more dangerous territory than the finely manicured halls of an elite preparatory school? If the risk was too large, why not call the event “An Assembly Without Shoes”?

In all fairness, raising awareness about the extent of global poverty and the simple things children (and adults) have to do without every day is a good thing. I’m not asking children to go around in burlap sacks, weeping and gnashing their teeth for the poor. But don’t get so carried away in marketing your social activism that you can’t call a spade a spade. Jill DiIorio, shoemanitarian for Toms shoes (the sponsor of the event), said it best as she addressed the shoeless student body.

“It doesn’t matter if you take off your shoes for five minutes or the whole day,” she said. “What matters is that you’re showing support for kids all over the world who don’t have a pair of shoes.”

DiIorio called Hockaday, which has green and white Toms shoes as part of its uniform, “the leader of the Toms movement in Dallas.” The movement she is referring to is the mission of Toms: For every pair of Toms shoes that is purchased, another is donated to a needy child. She hopes the message of today’s morning assembly will reverberate beyond the campus grounds.

“I hope everyone who participated will share the Toms movement with their friends and family, and if they’re in the market for a new pair of shoes, I hope they choose Toms,” DiIorio said.
