It’s High School Ladies’ Choice Tonight
Making reservations might get tricky tonight, thanks to the surplus of well-dressed teen couples that will be filling the seats at your favorite restaurants. Greenhill, ESD, and Hockaday are each hosting their annual Sadie Hawkins Dance tonight. The Sadie Hawkins Dance is a reverse prom, where the girls ask the guys to be their dates. The typical night starts with a photo op filled with camera-eager parents, followed by a fancy dinner and the actual dance. The night often ends with an after party.

DADYO’s Got Talent
ESD hosted a talent show last night for those involved in the diversity club DADYO, which consists of students from the big seven schools: ESD, Jesuit, Ursuline, St. Mark’s, Hockaday, Parish Episcopal, and Greenhill.
Sharon Bales, ESD’s DADYO coordinator, said the talent show will become an annual event since all the schools participated and the students had a wonderful all inclusive spirit.
Teachers from each school judged the competition, and the winner, Daniel Park of ESD, won for his acoustic guitar solo of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” Second and third place included students from Greenhill and St. Marks that showcased their musical talents with guitars, bongos, tambourines and vocals.

Strutting for a Cause
Did you watch models wear the latest fashions on the runway this season? Don’t worry, neither did I. But luckily I didn’t have to. This Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Greenhill School students will be sporting the latest trends for a “Winter Wonderland” charity fashion show in the Greenhill library. The cost is $5 for Greenhill students and $8 for general admission. All proceeds benefit the Family Place. Another incentive to trek to Addison? The first 50 people who arrive will receive a Neiman Marcus gift bag and discounts from Vineyard Vines and the Melanie Gayle boutique.

Greenhill Head of Upper School Announces Leave
David Braemer, Greenhill School’s well respected head of Upper School since 2003, has announced that this school year will be his last at Greenhill. Next year he will be the head of school at Ensworth School in Nashville, Tenn. While many students’ were surprised and disappointed by this announcement, his leave was no surprise to the Greenhill administration, which has known from the start that Mr. Braemer’s ultimate goal was to someday take on a head-of-school position at an independent school. Mr. Braemer, his wife, and his children, who currently attend Greenhill, will be missed by students and faculty alike. Greenhill has already started searching for a replacement, and hopes to fill the position by this spring.

Another Reason to be Thankful

Greenhill students with their special friends and grandparents eating lunch.
Greenhill School welcomed grandparents and special friends to their campus Friday afternoon for activities, learning, and fun. In previous years, school was in session the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and Grandparents and Special Friends Day occurred on the Tuesday before the holiday. But to the students’ excitement this year, Greenhill is closed the entire week of Thanksgiving. Teachers taught normal classes Friday morning, and grandparents and special friends joined their students in the afternoon. Students and teachers alike rejoiced at the 3 p.m. early dismissal as well.

Budding Engineers Build Bridge in 24-Hours

Roland Baumann, Simon Cohen, Rubi Perez, and Angelica Sanjuan ensured the bridge was structurally sound.
Doesn’t it seem like Dallas roads are perpetually under construction? Perhaps the solution to speedy projects lies with the city’s youth. A dozen students from DISD, Hockaday, Ursuline, and Greenhill constructed a 20-foot model of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in just one day.
If you don’t believe me, the entire thing was caught on film by producer Judy Kelly.”Calatrava Student Constructors Documentary: An Engineering Workshop,” will be screened 7 p.m. Friday at Simmons Hall on the SMU campus.

Facebook Targets Greenhill Grads

This little ad popped up on my Facebook screen, and I must say it caught my eye. While I’m accustomed to (and not really even bothered by) targeted advertising, I was a little surprised to see an actual person’s name listed.
It made me wonder if Austin Denesuk, or any other graduate of a Preston Hollow-area school, gave Facebook permission to use her name, photo, and alma mater? Or is this the latest round of questionable privacy practices by our lovable big brother, Mark Zuckerberg?

Greenhill Students Push For Greener Transportation Options
If you’re of the tree-hugging variety, the following weekend activity is probably of interest. The Organization of Young Environmental Activists is holding a protest and petitioning the City of Dallas for better, more extensive public transportation.
Greenhill senior Ivan Kumamoto is leading a group of students who are meeting at the DART station in the 8200 block of Forest Lane at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Greenhill Students Give Back to Berrys

As you may be aware, Houston’s Berry family was in a horrific car accident on July 2. Both parents were killed, and their three children — Willa, Aaron, and Peter — were severely injured. Communities throughout the South have reached out to help the Berry children, and the Preston Hollow community is no exception. In preparation for their b’nai mitzvah, several students from Greenhill School’s class of 2017 hosted a Berry Sweet Morning benefiting the Berry children on Sunday. They raised $5,333.22.
At the Kids Cooking Company in Preston Royal Village, supporters paid a $5 admission fee, and received Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Starbucks coffee, Chick-fil-A lemonade, manicures, face painting, berry bracelets, and more. Raffle tickets were available for purchase, and prizes included a 32-inch flat-screen TV, Rangers and Roughriders tickets, movie passes, and gift certificates.
