  • Lowe’s Rezoning Debate Heats Up

For a while, a storm has been brewing about Lowe’s plans to add a large gas station to its lot at Forest Lane and Inwood Road. Residents from Melshire Estates as well as members of the Jesuit and St. Rita’s community are rallying together to prevent the proposal from passing.

On March 7, concerned parties met with Councilwoman Ann Margolin and city representatives to discuss the issue. Now the debate is moving past the point of conversation into one of action. In order to defeat the proposal, a petition with at least 200 signatures and a strong show of community opposition is needed at the upcoming City Plan Commission meeting.

If you’re passionate about this issue, mark your calendar for next Thursday.

WHERE: Dallas City Hall, council chambers

    WHEN: 1:30 p.m., March 24

WHY: To voice your opinion about the Lowe’s Rezoning application

  • And You Thought Cane Rosso Had Authentic Pizza…

A sumptuous sampling of Dough Pizzaria's pies, which are coming to Dallas in May. Photo: Michael Giordano

Normally, if you wanted to eat a pizza made in an Italian oven, you’d need to hop on a plane first. Even the Best Pizza in Dallas is cooked in an apparatus built on this side of the pond. But soon (May, the owners hope), you will be able to sink your teeth into an authentically-made pie from Dough Pizzeria Napoletana.

The joint first opened in 2007 in San Antonio with an oven they shipped over from Naples, Italy. The second location will be at Preston and Forest, the former site of Chocolate Angel Too. Owners Doug and Lori Horn are still mum on what Dallas restauranteurs will be running operations, offering only the descriptor “restaurant people.” The pairs’ pizza comes with local and national acclaim and is scheduled to appear in an upcoming episode of Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (the spot was shot in February).

WHERE: Virginia Cook Realtors, at Preston and Forest

Join the conversation and learn where the issue stands now.

  • Houston and San Antonio-based Businesses Find New Homes in Dallas

Muzzies Dressy Dresses, originally from Houston, is making its Dallas debut at Preston and Forest this weekend. Executive director Lexia Allen said she is hoping to open up shop in the former Axis Fitness space as early as Friday. The store is mainly focusing on prom season, but also has 600 long and short dresses for any occasion.

In other Preston Forest Square news, Chocolate Angel Too has called it quits, as evidenced by paper covering all the windows and a message announcing the bakery and cafe is being remodeled into a pizza joint, Dough Pizzeria Napoletana. The San Antonio-based restaurant has plans to open in the “early spring.” The original Chocolate Angel in Richardson is still alive and well, but its franchise locations in Carrollton and Preston Forest closed at the end of December and January, respectively.

  • Salads and ’staches: a Movember Match

Absolutely, I am allured by alliteration. But there’s  more to this post’s title than pleasant prose. ‘Round these parts, November is known as Movember, a time for men to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer. Women may have the more established Pink movement in October, but who needs buildings changing colors, and NFL players wearing pink cleats when you can get ordinary blokes to decorate their upper lips?

Celebrate and support this cause with Fu Man Chew, a $25 “a lot to eat” salad and pizza dinner at Snappy Salads at Preston Forest Square on Friday. Proceeds will benefit Dallas Moustache, which I think is secretly Dallas Moustache and Moncole, as I’m pretty sure I need one to read the extremely small text on its website. At any rate, make your reservation for Fu Man Chew today as space is limited 972-991-7627

  • Kickin’ it Coffeehouse Style

I’ll take a spiced chai tea with a sprinkle of community news, please.

As part of a new initiative at People Newspapers, today I’m trading the 21st Floor of a downtown skyscraper for the cozy comfort of a Preston Hollow coffeehouse.

The idea is being out in the community, doing interviews in plain sight, mingling with locals, and actually being physically present in the coverage area will be fertile ground for news gathering and increasing news literacy. Not exactly difficult logic to follow, but smart ideas don’t have to be complicated.

Right now, specifically, I’m at I <3 Boba at Preston and Forest. Because, in fact, I do heart it.

Unfortunately, I appear to be one of the few people who does. So I will likely head out to a new place after lunch. Preferably one that is lighter on the techno music and heavier on crowds than my current locale.

Where’s your PH favorite beverage shop/WiFi hotspot?
