Don Meredith Missed A.W.A.R.E. Luncheon but Stories Were Still Memorable

Honoree “Dandy” Don Meredith was unable to attend the A.W.A.R.E. luncheon at the Fairmont due to health conditions Wednesday. However, his absence did not prevent his former Dallas Cowboys teammates from sharing some stories with the 1,100+ guests about the former Dallas Cowboy quarterback/SMU All-American/ABC sportscaster.

In a video tribute, ex-Cowboy Lee Roy Jordan said he once asked Meredith why he chose to attend SMU. Don’s reply: “It was close to home, and I could spell it.”

Former Cowboy Walt Garrison (pictured) recalled playing golf—and drinking beer—one day with Meredith when the cart the QB was driving solo tipped over and tumbled down a hill. Obviously worried about their friend, Garrison and the other golfers raced to the accident scene, only to see Meredith lying on the ground, holding his beer aloft and grinning: “I didn’t spill a drop!”

On a serious note, Roger Staubach, who quarterbacked the Cowboys first Super Bowl win in 1972, said that Meredith was the “foundation” of the success the Cowboys enjoyed in the 1970s. “As far as Cowboys quarterbacks,” Staubach said, “he still is Mr. Cowboy Quarterback.”
