Walter Kelly Named HPHS Principal

Highland Park High School has a brand new boss. Effective  July 1, Walter Kelly, of Richardson, will replace retiring principal Patrick Cates.

Kelly served as principal of Richardson ISD’s Lake Highlands High School beginning in 2008, and Richardson West Middle School from 2004 to 2008. He has also been principal of Telluride High School and Middle School in Telluride, Colo., and assistant principal of Austin’s S.F. Austin High School and Eanes’ Hill Country Middle School.

Says Superintendent Dawson Orr: “Walter Kelly is an outstanding educator, communicator, and mentor whose proven track record at pursuing and maintaining excellence makes him a perfect fit at Highland Park High School.”

Wondering — will this guy have to deal with the wacky band director mentioned in previous postings? If so, I hope he “has a pair”…looks can be deceiving but I’m sure he is a capable and competent administrator. Good luck to him.

I’ve talked to some of my friends who go to Lake Highlands and they have said a lot of good things about Mr. Kelly. I think that the district did a good job in selecting a new principal.
