I saw this coming, but thought we would see signs for Y football teams first. Did the yard signs for High School athtletes originally start out for varsity athletes? Are football and baseball the only ones that wait until the child has reached that level? Seems the trend is strongly heading in the direction of not making a child wait until they achieve a certain goal.
I love my boys with abandon, but honestly, do we need a yard sign for EVERYTHING? Next thing we will see is. “PROUD HOME OF A POTTY TRAINED STAR!!!” I’m getting my own yard sign! “Proud home of a Wine drinker.” I’m also getting my own spirit sticker for my car. “YAY ME!”
Having lived through three preschoolers, I can totally see how this happened:
Little Tommy sees the For Sale, Mad for Plaid, “No Parking Lot Here” and “Home of a [name your sport/school]” signs in the neighbors’ yards
Little Tommy goes to Little Gym, where the instructor (who he adores) hands him a colorful sign of his own. He doesn’t know what it says – after all he’s a preschooler
Little Tommy wants to plant it immediately in the front yard
It could be worse. At least Little Tommy’s urologist didn’t hand out signs.
I would be more worried about Little Tommy needing a urologist. Perhaps Tommy Senior?
In the late ’90s varsity football had them and the cheerleaders had full on megaphones in their yards, not the cutouts. Other sports had basically laminated posters that were also varsity level.
It’s my understanding that while it’s not a “racket” that there is one business that knocks out the wooden signs for high school students and that they’re not cheap. Does anyone know about this? Why is there no competition or is the money being split with the school?
“Patterson”, you owe me19.99 as I just threw up on my keyboard.
They also think he’s a genius because he stares at the ceiling fan and screams, “airpane, airpane”.
Ok, that’s just too weird. What will they do when the kid stays dry through the night…hire an airplane with a banner?
Perfect. Home of a The Little Gym Star. Sounds right.
Whoa, hold on a minute here. It’s not just that he/she goes to Little Gym, he/she is a STAR. Big difference.

Congrats, Merritt – the “Listen here Patterson” (or the abbreviated “Patterson” as evidenced above) is approaching meme status.
Every kid nowadays is so special. Listen here kiddos, you’re just run-of-the-mill until you actually excel at something.
