Rise and Shine, Park Cities (4-26-11)

1. A few months back, we highlighted the work being done by Friends of Lost Boys, a Dallas-based group that helps Sudanese refugees find work, a home, and an education in the United States. After the story ran, some of you contacted me asking for ways to help. Well here’s an opportunity.

On May 5, Highland Park grad and film producer Megan Mylan will screen “Lost Boys of Sudan” at the Angelika at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, and can be purchased at www.friendslostboys.org. At 7 p.m., there will be a Q&A with some of the Lost Boys at the theater.

2. Work has started on a deteriorating water main at the intersection of Armstrong Avenue and Lakeside Drive, and is expected to last until mid-May. The westbound lane of Armstrong will be closed during work hours. For concerns, complaints, or just a human voice that doesn’t begin every sentence with “WHAT DO YOU WANT MOM, I’M BUSY”, call the town of Highland Park’s engineering department at (214) 521- 4161.

3. The 8th-annual DFW Lymphomathon will take place Saturday at Fair Park. The 5k walk is a fundraiser for the Lymphoma Research Foundation; it raised $100,000 for the group last year.Park Cities resident Leigh Olsen founded the DFW chapter of the group, and has helped grow the event to 500 participants last year.
