Covenant School Wants to Play Beren Academy

As we told you yesterday, Covenant’s boys basketball team was supposed to play Houston’s Beren Academy on Friday night in the semifinals of the TAPPS 2A basketball tournament. But Beren, an Orthodox Jewish school, can’t play between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday. So the school’s berth in the state semis is going to Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills, the team Beren beat in a regional final.

Covenant headmaster Kyle Queal wants everyone to know that his school is more than willing to reschedule Friday’s game to accommodate Beren’s observance of the Sabbath. Last night, Queal issued the following statement:

Beren Academy recently contacted The Covenant School of Dallas about the possibility of rescheduling a Friday night TAPPS semi-final 2A basketball playoff game. Covenant has clearly expressed to Beren administrators and TAPPS leadership its openness to a mutually acceptable time to reschedule the game and accommodate Beren’s practice of Sabbath observance. It has been subsequently communicated to Covenant that the TAPPS Board has rejected Beren’s appeal to reschedule. While respectful of Beren Academy, Covenant understands the basketball playoff schedule is an exclusive decision of TAPPS. As such, the school submits to TAPPS as the governing authority with jurisdiction over this matter.

Sports editor Chuck Cox plans to cover Covenant’s games in the state tournament this weekend, regardless of who the Knights end up playing.
