Sweet 16: Scots Win 6A Title in Team Tennis
It didn’t take long for Highland Park to win its first state title at the Class 6A level.
HP’s powerhouse tennis team took care of that on Friday at the state team tennis tournament in College Station, topping New Braunfels 10-7 for the program’s state-record 16th state title overall.
It marks the seventh straight fall title for the Scots (22-0), who won the 4A crown for the past six years before jumping to the new 6A classification this season. The victory over the Unicorns allows HP to avenge a loss to New Braunfels in the 4A state title match in 2007, which also happens to be the most recent dual-match defeat for the Scots.
None of the current players remember that day, of course, but they are well aware of the tradition they helped preserve by bringing home another trophy. The Scots advanced to the final by defeating Houston Memorial 10-4 in the semifinals on Thursday.
The HP girls were especially strong all weekend, especially in clutch situations. Against New Braunfels, the Scots won all three girls doubles matches along with mixed doubles, and got singles victories from Chandler Carter, Elizabeth Tedford, Margo Taylor, and Jennifer Mee. Three of the four went to a third set.
On the boys side, HP won two of three doubles matches against the Unicorns — including a three-set nailbiter by Mac McCullough and Charlie Legg.
Against Memorial, the Scots won all of the girls singles and doubles matches in straight sets, as well as mixed doubles, meaning they needed just one point from the boys — which came from Phillip Quinn and Gardiner Perotti in doubles.
