Tom Thumb Will Leave Village Nov. 30

We’ve all known it was coming: Tom Thumb will close its doors at Highland Park Village on Nov. 30.

The grocer’s parent company, Safeway, informed the Village that it was pulling the location last March.

The company had to vacate by Dec. 1 in order to finalize the acquisition deal with Albertson’s.

But, Village management is hoping to secure another grocer in that same spot.

“We’ll have more to share on that as we get closer,” HP Village managing director Stephen Summers said. “We also want to assure our patrons and local residents that we are in talks with potential retailers and grocers to provide some of the services and goods that will be lost when Tom Thumb closes.”

In the meantime, new tenants are underway:

  • Giuseppe Zanotti, an Italian shoe boutique (the first in Texas, scheduled for early spring)
  • Dior Beauty (the first such boutique in the U.S., also scheduled for early spring)
  • Bluemercury, a skincare retailer (also the first in Texas, scheduled for early summer

It will be a sad day in the village for those of us who love the convenience of Tom Thumb. The pharmacy and reasonably priced groceries will be missed. The village is the owner’s to do with what they want, but I sure hope that Royal Blue or whoever else may come in there will carry more than $8 box of crackers and hopefully not $1,000 piars of women’s shoes.

I agree that the village is the owner’s to do with what they want. However, your hard-earned dollars (and mine) are ours to do with what we want. When Tom Thumb is gone, that is one less reason I will have to go to HPV. In the meanwhile, I hope the owners have the good sense to allow the UPS Store to remain in HPV. If that departs, I may never set foot in HPV again.

Nooooooo! I’m not ready for this! The cashiers thought they would keep it open until after Christmas. Now what am I going to do for my last minute Christmas grocery needs!?!!? I am going to miss Karen, Georgia, Juanita, Shakay, Nava, Victor and all the other Tom Thumb workers who have taken care of my family and me for all these years.
