Mike Singletary experienced the pinnacle of gridiron success during a Pro Football Hall of Fame career in the NFL that included a championship ring from Super Bowl XX.

Now, Singletary hopes to pass along that winning legacy to high school players at Trinity Christian, where he was hired on Wednesday as the new head coach.

After a 12-year career as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears — during which he was twice named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year — Singletary transitioned into coaching. He was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for parts of three seasons between 2008 and 2010 but has no coaching experience at the college or high school level.

“It’s an honor for me to join the TCA family. I welcome the opportunity to get to know the young men who are a part of the football team, as well as the faculty, staff, and parents,” Singletary said in a release. “I have a soft spot in my heart for young men, and it’s my desire to help them develop into all that God created them to be through football and beyond.”

He takes over the TCA program from Mark Howard, who coached the Trojans for the past four seasons. TCA finished 2-10 last season and had just one victory in TAPPS district play.

Singletary, 59, is a Houston native and Baylor alumnus. His staff at TCA will include defensive coordinator Steve Mercer, who has been with the program for the past 14 years. School officials said Mercer will help to ensure continuity in case Singletary leaves for another coaching job.

“He is highly respected not only for his accomplishments in football but for the kind of man he is,” Mercer said of Singletary. “I am looking forward to working with and learning from him.”
