In a game that was stopped after three quarters because of inclement weather, Flower Mound Coram Deo cruised past Covenant 49-6 on Thursday at Miller Field.

The Lions established their ground game early, driving the length of the field on the game’s opening possession and taking a 7-0 lead when Cooper Walthall’s 3-yard dive up the middle.

“We made them earn that first touchdown,” said Covenant head coach Jesse Olvera. “Coram Deo is bigger than our boys up front but I was proud of our defensive effort on that first drive.”

Coram Deo recovered an onside kick and took advantage of the short field to go up 14-0 midway through the first quarter. After a Covenant turnover, the Lions (4-0) capitalized again and increased their lead to 21-0 after another Walthall touchdown.

“They got up on us pretty quick,” Olvera said. “But we didn’t give up against a much bigger team.”

The Knights (2-2) settled down on offense and made the game competitive on their next possession. Covenant orchestrated a long drive and cut the lead to 21-6 on Cody Sellers’ 8-yard run on a speed option.

“We adjusted to Coram Deo’s defensive scheme and relied on the read option,” said Olvera. “Cody’s touchdown was set up by that long run on a jet sweep to Jack Spangler, and that ignited our offense.”

But in the rain, the Lions ground game proved to be too much. Coram Deo went ahead 42-6 at halftime.

“We schedule bigger schools like Coram Deo to prepare us for district play,” said Olvera. “We’ll be ready for Irving Highlands next week.”

Alec Scully amassed 76 yards of total offense for Covenant, while Sellers rushed for 42 yards and a score. Sellers also put in a good defensive performance with seven solo tackles and a sack.
