Conscious Capitalism Dallas | May Chapter Event A Six Dollar Cup of Coffee screening
May 15 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
What’s more shocking:
a $1 cup of coffee or a $6 cup of coffee?
All operators in the coffee industry agree on the answer: a one-dollar cup of coffee shouldn’t even be a reality.
By roasting coffee at the origin–thus selling the finished product rather than the raw material–one Mexican coffee co-operative disrupted the industry by insisting on paying farmers the precio justo–a consistent, fair price. In doing so, farmers have the option not to migrate to find better-paying work.
From the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico to a coffee shop in Seattle, this documentary narrative takes us through the co-op’s value chain of production and trading to reveal the complexity of this highly globalizedcommodity market.
A Six Dollar Cup of Coffee illustrates the inherent challenges within fair trade coffee. Although fair trade isn’t always fair for all involved, conscious solutions–from field to cup–can be harvested.
Following the film screening will be a brief Q&A facilitated by Christina Rossini of Inissor International, a fair trade coffee importer and distributor.
